explanation of the entries

This checklist is an alphabetical summary of all the Denis Mackail short stories known to me – excluding the three translations!

In ordering the titles, initial articles (‘A’, ‘The’ etc.) are ignored. Full entries appear in the descriptive bibliography under appropriate book titles and/or original serial publication dates. Here, against each title, are shown codes for :

The meanings of each set of codes are given below, in the next section, but <abbr> tags in the page coding mean that if you hover the cursor over an abbreviation or link in the entries here you will see the full name. Wherever useful, data is linked through to the appropriate entry or set of entries in the aforementioned descriptive bibliography, which will also give you full details.

Alternative titles are shown in the alphabetical sequence with a ‘see’ reference: under the entry for the first-used title the appearance of the alternative title is indicated by asterisks (*) – note that some of the first-used titles may have been assigned by periodical editors and Mackail may have preferred the apparently ‘later’ title (as found in the book publications). For consistency, all the Tales from Greenery Street stories are indexed under their title without the house number, even though it appeared at the start of the titles of two of the stories in their original magazine publication.
